InfoPrevious Elected Experience: State Representative (1997-2000)

Occupation: Senator

Education: B.A., Bowling Green State University; M.P.A., Bowling Green State University

A fourth generation resident of Cuyahoga Falls, Kevin Coughlin was elected to three terms in the Ohio House of Representatives and served there from 1997-2001. He has served in the Ohio Senate since 2001.

Senator Coughlin is Chairman of the Health, Human Services & Aging Committee. He also serves on the Energy & Public Utilities Committee and the Highways & Transportation Committee. He is also a commissioner representing Ohio on the Midwestern Higher Education Compact.

Senator Coughlin was the 2005 Chair of the Council of State Governments Midwestern Legislative Conference, joining former Speaker of the House Jo Ann Davidson and former Senate Presidents Stanley Aronoff and Oliver Ocasek as the only Ohioans to lead the MLC in the last thirty years. The organization consists of lawmakers and staff from eleven Midwest states and three Canadian provinces. With a focus on those issues of greatest interest to policymakers in the heartland, the MLC provides state leaders with the resources and tools they need to effectively address today's public policy challenges. The MLC provides its members with access to information and research, opportunities for networking and exchanging innovative ideas, and leadership training. Kevin currently serves as Immediate Past Chair.

For five years, Coughlin co-chaired CSG's Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development, which trains 33 Midwestern legislators every year to be strong leaders.

In 2005, Senator Coughlin was called "one of the nation's most promising leaders in state government" by the Council of State Governments as he was selected for it's Toll Fellowship leadership program.

In 1999, Senator Coughlin was named an American Marshall Fellow by the German Marshall Fund of the United States. GMF is an American public policy institution dedicated to promoting greater cooperation and understanding between the United States and Europe. GMF does this by supporting individuals and institutions working on transatlantic issues, by convening leaders to discuss the most pressing transatlantic themes, and by examining ways in which transatlantic cooperation can address a variety of global policy challenges.

Closer to home, Kevin Coughlin is actively involved in the community. He is a part-time faculty member in the University of Akron's Department of Political Science. Kevin is a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, the Blossom Music Center Board of Overseers, the Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens Operating Board of Directors, Fraternal Order of Police Associates, Darrow Street Grange, and several community groups. He is also a member of several chambers of commerce.

A graduate of Woodridge High School, Kevin Coughlin holds a BA and a Masters of Public Administration from Bowling Green State University. He and his wife Anne Coughlin, a physical therapist, live in Cuyahoga Falls with their daughters, Kathryn and Elizabeth.
