InfoGARLAND, Mahlon Morris, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Pittsburgh, Pa., May 4, 1856; moved with his parents to Alexandria, Huntingdon County, Pa.; attended the common schools; having learned the trade of puddling and heating, joined the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers, of which he became president; member of the select council of Pittsburgh in 1886 and 1887; appointed by President McKinley United States collector of customs (then called surveyor of customs) at Pittsburgh on April 7, 1898; reappointed by President Roosevelt in 1902 and 1906 and by President Taft in 1910, and served until March 3, 1915; served as vice president of the American Federation of Labor; member of the Pittsburgh School Board; member of the borough council of Edgewood, Pa.; elected as a Republican to the Sixty-fourth, Sixty-fifth, and Sixty-sixth Congresses and served from March 4, 1915, until his death; chairman, Committee on Mines and Mining (Sixty-sixth Congress); had been reelected to the Sixty-seventh Congress; died in Washington, D.C., November 19, 1920; interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pa.
