| Info | Elected to two terms on the Gardena City Council in March 1997 and again in 2001, he is the first African-American to be elected and, at 44 years old, is the most senior member of Council. He has served as Mayor Pro Tem two times during the seven years he has been a member of Gardena City Council.
His family moved to Gardena when Bradford was nine years old. He attended Purche Avenue Elementary School, Henry Clay Junior High School, and Gardena High School. He then attended San Diego State University and California State University, Dominguez Hills, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and a Certificate as a Para-Legal.
Bradford served as a marketing representative with IBM from 1983 through 1990, then he took a leave of absence to pursue his goal and ran his first campaign as a Gardena City Council candidate. His experiences in student government, student body council, as well as his knowledge from working on several political campaigns, fueled his energies in this unsuccessful race. After two subsequent unsuccessful attempts, Mr. Bradford was the highest vote getter in his successful bid in the March 1997 election.
Councilman Bradford's experience as program director and recycling coordinator for the Los Angeles Conservation Corps from 1990 to 1994, and his two years as the solid waste director for the City of Compton, serve him well in the new challenges facing the City of Gardena in view of state legislation affecting the field of waste management and reporting.
Also, his previous service as the District Director of Congresswoman Millender-McDonald's Torrance District Office continues to provide Mr. Bradford with the opportunity to work hand-in-hand for necessary mutual support on important legislative issues.
Additionally, he has provided extraordinary leadership to the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity as their National Director of "Bigger and Better Business."
Councilman Bradford's commitment to the community is exhibited by his active involvement as a member of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Committee of Gardena, Chair of the Black History Month Celebration Committee, a PTA member, an assistant Troop Leader in the Boy Scouts, and past president of the Hollypark Homeowners Association, as well as serving faithfully as a volunteer coach in Gardena's youth sports programs. He is also well-known for his quarterly Up-Close, Open Council Office Sessions, which offer opportunities for residents and local business people to give him vital input.
Bradford has been the recent recipient of a number of special recognitions for his exemplary and dedicated endeavors at a state, county, and community level:
February 2003 - honored with a Trailblazer Award, given by the Gardena Black History Month Celebration Committee in February 2003;
July 2003 - received the 2003 Hoodie "Public Servant of the Year" Award from Southern California-wide listeners of Radio Station 100.3-The Beat; and
July 2003 - was named the 2003 Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt "Democrat of the Year" by the Los Angeles County Democratic Party.
Most recently, of note, Councilman Bradford headed efforts to sponsor the City's First Annual Jazz Festival, which was held in August 2003 at a local Gardena park, and was an overwhelming success under Bradford's leadership.
