Won the 1972 Democratic Senate primary, defeating Lt. Governor Roberto Mondragon (who later ran for Governor as a Green) but leaving some bitterness among ethnic politicians.
SANTA FE � Jack Daniels, a former state legislator and father of Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, died early Thursday. He was 79.
The cause of death was not immediately announced.
Gov. Bill Richardson ordered that flags in New Mexico be flown at half-staff for one week in memory of Daniels.
"Jack Daniels was a true friend, and more important, a great New Mexican who contributed so much to this state and to our country," Richardson said.
Daniels was appointed in August 1967 to the New Mexico House of Representatives by then-Gov. Jack Campbell to succeed Ray McNeill of Hobbs, who died. Daniels served through 1970.
In 1968, Daniels was a member of the Corporations and Banks Committee, the Taxation and Revenue Committee and the Rules and Order of Business Committee. He chaired the Education Committee in 1969 and 1970.
He was a member of the interim legislative Joint University Investigating Committee in 1969.
Daniels was a member of the New Mexico Investment Council from 1963 to 1967.
He ran for governor in 1970, losing in the Democratic primary election to Bruce King, who won the governorship.
Daniels ran for the U.S. Senate in 1972 as the Democratic nominee against Republican Pete Domenici, who was elected to the office.
Daniels was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and came with his family to Hobbs in 1937.
He attended Hobbs High School, New Mexico Military Institute and the University of New Mexico. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Daniels owned a Hobbs insurance agency started by his father and owned most of the First National Bank of Hobbs.
Denish told The Albuquerque Tribune in 1969 that she was her father's "big problem."
"In high school, I never came home from dates when I was supposed to," she said.
However, "he puts a lot of faith in us and lets us go our own way pretty much," said Denish, who at the time was 20 and a junior at UNM.
