InfoCarol Miller is a public health leader who has been living in a frontier mountain village in northern New Mexico for more than 30 years with her husband Larry. Their daughter Sarah recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from Fort Lewis College in Durango.

Education

Carol has a BA in Art from Wheaton College in Massachusetts and a Masters in Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley. She has a Certificate in Bioethics from Georgetown University and studied Education and Anthropology at the University of New Mexico. Miller was an Emergency Medical Technician in northern New Mexico for thirteen years, learning first hand about the health crisis as it affects individuals, families, and communities.

Government Service

In 1993, Carol served as a Presidential Appointee to the White House Health Care Task Force headed by Hillary Clinton. Carol was also a Presidential Appointee in the Reagan Administration where she worked in the US Public Health Service. Miller has won numerous New Mexico and national awards recognizing her accomplishments in public health. Carol was a VISTA Volunteer in Peñasco from 1979-1980.

National Work

Carol is the founder and current Executive Director of the National Center for Frontier Communities (www.frontierus.org), the only national organization dedicated to improving the lives of the people living in the most isolated and sparsely populated communities in the United States. She is a consultant to the National Rural Health Association and the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health.

New Mexico Work

Carol is a founding member and current administrator for the Picuris-Peñasco Community Coalition and its social services project The SPOT for Community Wellness in Peñasco. (SPOT Stands for Strengthening Pride, Optimism, and Trust).
