| Info | Jim Melenchuk is a former Saskatchewan MLA and cabinet minister.
He served as leader of the Sask Liberal Party during the 1999 provincial election and was one of three Liberal MLAs elected that year. The three were persuaded by the NDP, who had won a minority government in the election, to join with them in a coalition in exchange for cabinet positions. One of the three, Jack Hillson, later withdrew from the coalition.
Upset with the agreement, grassroots party members selected anti-coalition candidate David Karwacki as the new Liberal party leader. When Melenchuk and the other Liberal MLA remaining in the coalition, Ron Osika, refused to leave, the party fractured and Melenchuk and Osika sat as Independents.
Melenchuk served in such positions as Minister of Finance and Minister of Education from 1999 to 2003. He and Osika decided to seek re-election as New Democrats during the 2003 general election, but both were defeated by Sask Party candidates in their respective constituencies.
