InfoBorn August 12, 1955 in Saskatoon, Eric was educated there at Estey School, Mount Royal and Walter Murray Collegiates, and the University of Saskatchewan. He received a B.A. in Political Science in 1976 and an LL.B. in 1979. After articling in Saskatoon, Eric practiced law there for eleven years full-time and four years part-time.

Eric was active in various professional and community organizations and did some work for the Law Reform Commission. Elected as MLA for Saskatoon Idylwyld on October 21, 1991, Eric was re-elected as MLA for Saskatoon Mount Royal in the 1995 and 1999 elections, and Saskatoon Massey Place in 2003.

Eric served as Vice-Chair of the Legislative Standing Committee on Public Accounts from 1993 to 1995, in addition to being elected as the caucus member of the Cabinet Legislative Review Committee from 1991 to 1995. On November 22, 1995, Eric was first appointed to cabinet as Minister of Health. He served as Minister of Finance from 1997 to 2003. In February 2003, he assumed the dual portfolios of Minister of Industry and Resources, Minister of Justice and Attorney General.

In November 2003, Eric was re-appointed as Minister of Industry and Resources, and Minister Responsible for the Sask Research Council, Sask Opportunities Corporation, Tourism Saskatchewan, and Information Services Corporation of Sask. He also became the Minister Responsible for Investment Saskatchewan and Chair of the Liquor and Gaming Authority, which he chaired until February 2006.
