InfoRoxane Gilmore is a wife, mother and college professor who understands the daily complexities of modern life. As the only first lady in history to continue her professional career while serving the citizens of Virginia, Roxane's tenure promises to be one of achievement and success.

A native Virginian, Roxane Gatling was born in Suffolk and graduated from Suffolk High School. She is an alumna of the University of Virginia. She earned her B.A. in history, classics and anthropology, M.A. in ancient history in 1978, and is currently completing her Ph.D. in ancient history.

While a student and teaching assistant at the University of Virginia, Roxane met and married Jim Gilmore. In 1992, she began teaching at Henrico and Chesterfield County Public Schools. Roxane is now a professor of classics at Randolph-Macon College. Her classes include Latin, Women in Ancient Literature, Roman History, Greek History, Epic Poetry and Roman Britain.

As First Lady, Roxane has been with the Department of Education to promote the Standards of Learning by creating an Internet clearing house of resources for teachers, parents, students and the business world.

She is also working with the Virginia Tourism Corporation to promote Virginia's historic, cultural and recreational treasures. By meeting with travel writers and tour directors from around the world, Mrs. Gilmore will attract unprecedented attention for our Commonwealth. Virginia's premier resorts are sure to profit from her talents as an avid tennis player and budding golfer.

In 1994, Roxane was appointed to the Family and Children's Trust Fund (FACT) where she continues to help raise funds to combat violence and sexual assault aimed at children. Roxane is a member of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Board of Directors.

Roxane and Jim's greatest joy comes from raising their two sons, eleven-year-old Ashton and Jay, who is 16. Roxane and Jim are active supporters of their children's school-related activities including youth football, Little League, youth basketball and swim team. The Gilmores are members of River Road Methodist Church.
