InfoA native of Tignish, Gail A. Shea was a candidate in the 1996 general election and was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island as the MLA for Tignish-DeBlois on April 17, 2000, and re-elected on September 29, 2003.

On May 1, 2000, she was appointed Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, where she served until August 22, 2002, when she was appointed Minister of Transportation and Public Works. Mrs. Shea is the first female to hold this portfolio in Prince Edward Island. On October 9, 2003, she was re-appointed Minister of Transportation and Public Works and appointed Minister Responsible for the Status of Women. Mrs. Shea has served on the Standing Committee on Fisheries, Intergovernmental Affairs and Transportation, and the Strategic Planning Committee on Community and Social Policy. Mrs. Shea is a member of Treasury Board.

Prior to holding elected office, Mrs. Shea worked as an assistant to Premier Pat Binns.

Mrs. Shea was very active in her community as a volunteer with the local Home and School Association and school trustees, community festival and minor sports. She is a member of the Catholic Women’s League and the Royal Canadian Legion.

Mrs. Shea lives in Tignish with her husband, Russell. They have five children: Sally, Kelly, Sandy, Holly and Shawn and four grandchildren.
