InfoThe Hon. Robert Dixon Pickersgill, the Minister of Water, Land, Environment & Climate Change, has had a long and distinguished political career.

Mr. Pickersgill received his educational start in Clarendon at the Chapelton Primary School and Clarendon College. He pursued his tertiary education at the University of the West Indies, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Diploma in Education.

His career path began at the St. Jago High School in St. Catherine where he taught English Language, Spanish and Economics.

He then transitioned into law and was articled to the law firm Hew and Bell. He is currently a partner in the law firm of Pickersgill, Dowding and Bailey-Williams.

Mr. Pickersgill has held several positions in the Peoples’ National Party (PNP). He was first a member of the Party’s Original Secretariat. He was the first Chairman of the PNP Youth Organization, and he is a former Treasurer and Vice President of the Party.

He was the youngest Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the Party and the only Chairman of the Tendencies Committee.

Mr. Pickersgill is the longest serving Chairman of the PNP, a position which he has held since 1993.

A Member of Parliament since 1989, Mr. Pickersgill is serving his sixth consecutive term as the MP for North West St. Catherine.

His contribution to Central Government spans over two decades.

Prior to his current portfolio as Minister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, Mr. Pickersgill has served as:-

Minister of Public Utilities and Transport from 1989 to 1993
Minister of Public Utilities and Energy from 1993 to 1995
Minister of Public Utilities, Transport and Energy from 1995 to 1997
Minister of Mining and Energy from 1998 to 2001
Minister of Transport and Works from 2001 to 2006
Minister of Housing, Transport, Water and Works from 2006 to 2007.
Mr. Pickersgill has to his credit several major infrastructure projects including Phase 1A of Highway 2000; the Half Way Tree Transportation Centre; the expansion of the Norman Manley and Sangster International Airports in Kingston and Montego Bay; and the expansion and upgrading of the island’s seaports.

Mr. Pickersgill also served as a Councillor in the KSAC’s Mountain View Division. He is a former Chairman of the University of the West Indies Guild of Graduates (Jamaica Branch) and a former Member of the Council of the University of the West Indies.

Mr. Pickersgill was born in Kingston on February 26, 1943 to Armond Pickersgill, a Civil Servant, and Sophia Pickersgill, now both deceased.

He is an active member of the United Church and enjoys swimming and lawn tennis.
