InfoTyler Olson was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, and has lived in House District 38 for almost his entire life. Tyler recently married his wife, Sarah Halbrook Olson, who works at the United Way of East Central Iowa.

Tyler is a sixth generation Iowan and fourth generation Cedar Rapidian. His father, Ron, operates a family-owned third generation small business in Cedar Rapids. His mother, Sue, is a social worker with experience at a number of Cedar Rapids human service agencies including the Child Protection Center, Madge Phillips Center, Young Parents Network and the Community Empowerment Board.

Tyler graduated from George Washington Senior High School in 1994. He was an All-American swimmer at Washington, and a member of two state championship teams. He earned his bachelor's degree in government and history from Claremont McKenna College, cum laude, in 1998, where he was also an All-American swimmer. Tyler earned his law degree from the University of Iowa in 2003. At the Iowa College of Law, he served as the Senior Note and Comment Editor for Volume 28 of The Journal of Corporation Law and President of the Iowa Student Bar Association.

Tyler is an attorney at Bradley & Riley, PC, a law firm with offices in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, where he has a general practice, including, but not limited to, business and corporate and real estate law. He is licensed to practice in the Iowa State Courts, and the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa.

Tyler is a member of the American Bar Association, Iowa State Bar Association, Linn County Bar Association and serves on the Iowa State Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Justice for All Committee. He also serves as Treasurer of the Linn Law Club.

Tyler served as Finance Director for Rob Tully for Congress in Dubuque in the fall of 1998. He also served on the Iowa Democratic Party Coordinated Campaign in Linn County during the 1998 election cycle. Tyler worked as Assistant Finance Director-Washington for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in Washington, D.C. from 1999-2000.

Tyler is a member of the Cedar Rapids Downtown Rotary and chairs the Downtown District Creative Counsel's Housing Team. In 2005, the Housing Team sponsored the first ever Cedar Rapids Downtown Housing Summit, an event which brought together over seventy-five developers, government officials, investors, bankers, potential residents and other community leaders to discuss the future of downtown housing.

Tyler is a founding member of the Board of Directors of Corridor Free Wireless, Inc., a not-for-profit entity organized to bring free wireless internet access to downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Coralville.

Tyler was one of the leaders of the petition drive and campaign that led to the change in form of government in Cedar Rapids effective November, 2005. He served as Treasurer of Citizens for a Better Cedar Rapids, and was heavily involved in the strategy of the campaign that led to almost 70% of Cedar Rapidians voting to move to a city manager/city council form of government.

Tyler is a member of the Board of Directors of the Neighborhood Revitalization Service and the New Bohemia Arts & Culture District. He is also a member of Access Iowa, a group working to attract and retain young people in the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City Corridor, where he was the Civic Committee Chair and a member of the Board of Directors in 2005. Tyler also serves as a volunteer boys swimming coach at his alma mater, Washington High School and has volunteered for Mount Mercy College. In 2005, he served on the 15 in 5 Community Planning Committee's Downtown & Riverfront Subcommittee. Tyler is also a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Tyler serves in the leadership group of the Linn County Phoenix Club. He has also served on the Linn County Democratic Central Committee Finance Committee.
