InfoThe justices of the Supreme Court of Ohio today reflected on the distinguished career of former Justice Robert E. Holmes, who died Wednesday morning at his home in Powell.

Justice Holmes served on the Supreme Court from Dec. 11, 1978, until Dec. 31, 1992. Holmes was known as a meticulous and fair jurist who was a strong advocate for judicial restraint.

“Bob Holmes was a good friend and a valued colleague,” said Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer. “An avid outdoorsman he lived a life of personal responsibility and self-reliance. He was recognized by lawyers and judges as a principled jurist who earned the reputation as a strict constructionist. He left a permanent legacy on the law of Ohio.”

Holmes was first elected to public office as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives in 1960, representing the citizens of his native Franklin County. After a distinguished career spanning four, two-year terms, Holmes left the chamber as the second-ranking legislative leader in the House.

He spent 10 years on the 10th District Court of Appeals in Franklin County before his appointment to the Supreme Court in 1978. Coincidentally, it was Tom Moyer who replaced him on the appellate bench when Holmes took his appointment to the Supreme Court.

“His entire three decades-plus in public service has been marked with a certain judiciousness that commends itself to others who rise to positions of authority,” the Columbus Dispatch editorialized when he was preparing to leave office in 1992. “… Holmes was a calm voice for judicial restraint,” the paper wrote.

Born Oct. 14, 1922, Holmes was educated as an undergraduate at Ohio University and received his law degree from the Ohio State University.

Justice Holmes is survived by sons Robert E Holmes, Jr., 48, of New York City and Hamilton Barclay Holmes, 47, of Los Angeles, and their families.

“Our father taught us everything about the beauty of the great outdoors,” said Robert Holmes Jr. “We're proud to know that his legacy of commitment to natural resources will live on.”
