"I decided to run for City Council in 1995 after helping to rejuvenate my neighborhood association. I am a firm believer in the importance of strong neighborhoods and the continued growth of Community-Oriented Policing and Community-Oriented Government."
In his third term after his 2003 victory, Tom Hayhurst serves on the Regulations Committee as co-chair and is City Council's appointment to the Urban Enterprise Board, City Council Flood Control Committee and the Emergency Medical Services Task Force. In 1999 he received the Local Elected Official Award from the Indiana Public Health Association.
Hayhurst is a physician specializing in pulmonary medicine and has lived in Fort Wayne most of his life, although he has resided in Indianapolis, Michigan, Cleveland and Atlanta during his medical training.
Hayhurst continues to be active in his neighborhood association and plans to focus on controlling taxation, and 4th District challenges such as traffic congestion, crime and flooding. He has assisted in the development of 12 new neighborhood associations that will provide better representation to the citizens of the 4th District.
Active as a volunteer in the community, his activities have included work in his church, Matthew 25 Health and Dental Clinic, Arts United and Indiana High Speed Rail Association.
Married to Judy Hayhurst, whom he is proud to say he met in the third grade at Forest Park Elementary School, they are the parents of daughters Anne and Susan. In his spare time Tom like to fish, boat, read, run with his dog and have fun with his two grandsons.
