Info | For Larry O’Brien Ottawa has always been his home. He was born at the Grace Hospital on July 19, 1949. He studied at Elmdale Elementary, Fisher Park and graduated from Merivale High School, class of 1968.
Larry continued his post-secondary education in Ottawa, attending Algonquin School of Technology and in 1972 he graduated with a diploma in Technology.
Upon graduation Larry chose to stay in his community and joined the growing high technology sector that was talking off. He worked along side of other innovators like Terry Matthews and Mike Cowpland. Over the next decade he worked for Microsystems International Ltd. (MIL), the Communications Research Centre, Motorola Communications, Insta-Call Ltd. and Reltek Inc. until in 1982 he founded CALIAN Technologies Ltd.
Calian began as a one-person consulting company and in the last 23 years Larry grew it to become a successful, publicly traded company that is one of the three largest high-tech employers in Ottawa. The company grew as a direct result of strong values defined and driven by Larry’s personal commitment to honesty, transparency, adding value and being financially prudent.
In 1983, Larry and Debbie O’Brien were married they have two sons; Michael and Matthew.
Mr. O’Brien is a past member of the Prime Minister’s Advisory Council on Science and Technology (ACST), a past chairman of the Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade (SAGIT) on Information Technologies and Telecommunications.
Larry also served as one the co-chair’s of the Regional Economic Diversification Opportunities (REDO) committee created in 1996 by the previous federal government to assist public servants who had been downsized.
Larry was appointed chairman of the Canadian Advanced Technology Association (CATA) from 1994 until 1996. He served on both the Ontario Jobs and Investment Board (OJIB) and the municipal investment review committee in 1998.
Larry was the 1996 Ottawa Carleton Board of Trade’s Business Person of the Year and the 1997 recipient of the Premier’s Award for Technology.
Larry was co-chair of Saint Vincent Hospital’s capital campaign in 2004 which achieved the goal of raising $ 7.5 million.
In 2006 Larry and Debbie were awarded the United Way Community builder of the year award.
