Merrill to the Sixteenth Congress; elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress, reelected as an Adam-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, elected as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses, and reelected as an Anti-Jacksonian candidate to the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses and served from January 13, 1820, until his death in Baltimore, Md., April 15, 1831; chairman, Committee on Manufactures (Nineteenth through Twenty-first Congresses); interment in East Poultney Cemetery, East Poultney, Vt.
