| Info | Maria is a veteran activist with over 20 years of service to the City of Philadelphia, its constituents and neighborhoods, the people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and beyond. She has advocated tirelessly for economic development, women’s and workers’ rights, family wages, voter registration, health care availability and other issues of importance to Philadelphia and Commonwealth residents and communities.
Since 2001 María D. Quiñones-Sánchez has served as the Regional Director for the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA), serving Pennsylvania and Delaware. At PRFAA in 2002, Maria mounted a historic, seven-city Puerto Rican/Latino voter registration and Get Out The Vote (GOTV) effort in Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley and Central Pennsylvania. By 2004 the campaign registered close to 32,000 new Latino voters and produced an estimated increase of 35% of the Latino turnout in the campaign’s targeted areas. In addition to the voter registration drive, under Maria’s stewardship PRFAA has helped Latino non-profit organizations and provides technical assistance and support to over 70 organizations statewide, leading to millions of dollars in new grants and resources obtained by the organizations.
Maria is a founding member of the Pennsylvania Statewide Latino Coalition and served as its first
Co-Chair of the Board of Directors in 2001. From June 1996 to June 2000 she served as the first female and youngest Executive Director of ASPIRA, the largest Latino educational institution in Pennsylvania. Her accomplishments include the elimination of a structural deficit which represented over 50% of the agency’s budget, the reorganization of its finance department which included the completion of seven annual audits, the creation of the first bilingual charter school in Pennsylvania (Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community Charter School), and the development of a multi-million dollar school and administrative office building in her neighborhood of Hunting Park.
From 1988-1996, she served in several city government positions including Deputy Commissioner of Elections and Legislative Assistant in City Council. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Women’s Campaign Fund, a statewide political action committee working to elect progressive women to the State Legislature. She was also recently named to the National Register’s Who’s Who for 2003-2004 for her professional accomplishments and community work.
Maria ran unsuccessfully for City Council for the 7th District in 1999, garnering over 4,000 votes and the endorsement of almost every major newspaper in the city and the 7th district. While Maria did not run in the 2003 election, it is her intention to run in 2007 for the 7th Councilmanic District.
Maria is a graduate of Philadelphia public schools. She attended Temple University and completed the Masters in Human Services program at Lincoln University in 1992. She is married to Tomas Sanchez and they have two sons, Edgar and Tomasito. Having grown up in the Hunting Park section of the city, she now resides in the eastern North Philadelphia neighborhood of Norris Square.
