You will find our own Dick and Cindy Lyon in the very front of St Anne's, worshiping during the early morning service.
Richard Lyon was born on July 14, 1923 in Pasadena. He attended Yale graduating with honors in 1944 and received a master's degree from Stanford in 1953.
Dick Lyon, and right at age 18 as a Pasadena Swim Club member selected to participate in the 1940 World Olympics in Tokyo Japan in the 400 meter relay. The games were canceled because of the outbreak of war in Europe.
He also attended Columbia University Midshipmen's School receiving his commission in October 1944. He served as a Navy Scout and Raider in the Pacific Theatre and in China as an Intelligence Officer. He was released from active duty in 1946, subsequently joining the Naval Reserve. Returning to active duty in early 1951 he commissioned the "Underwater Demolition Team FIVE" and served in Korea until late 1952. Upon release, he resumed his Reserve participation.
In July 1974, Dick became the first "Special Warfare" (SEAL) admiral in the history of the U.S. Navy. He is a graduate of both the National and Naval War Colleges. He was the first Reserve officer ever to be appointed to the Board of Directors of the United States Naval Institute where he served as Chairman of the Editorial Board.
Included among his 20 awards and decorations are the Legion of Merit, Navy Commendation Medal and Combat Action Ribbon. Another first in his naval career was the request by the Secretary of the Navy for Lyon to be the first Reserve admiral to return to active duty as Deputy Chief of Naval Reserve in July 1978.
He retired in July 1983 at the rank of Rear Admiral after nearly 41 years of naval service.
Dick was elected Mayor of the City of Oceanside in November of 1992, re-elected in 1996 and retired in 2000 after eight years in office.
He is an Olympic and world record swimmer, a private pilot and an avid sailor, body-surfer and golfer. Dick, the father of nine children is married to Cynthia Gisslin, who, with their three youngest children have resided in Oceanside since 1981.
Anyone watching Dick closely knows how he loves kids. He has years of service teaching and guiding St Anne's kids in all age groups. He is also a recent vestry member, serving in many capacities here and continues to be a vital part of our fellowship.
