InfoBUCK, Daniel Azro Ashley, (son of Daniel Buck), a Representative from Vermont; born in Norwich, Vt., April 19, 1789; moved with his parents to Chelsea; was graduated from Middlebury College in 1807 and from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1808; commissioned a lieutenant in the Engineer Corps of the United States Army in the latter year; resigned in 1811 and studied law; appointed a second lieutenant in the Third Artillery in 1811; raised a volunteer company of rangers in 1813 and served until 1815; appointed a captain of the Thirty-first Infantry in 1813; was honorably discharged June 15, 1815; was admitted to the bar in 1814 and commenced the practice of law in Chelsea, Vt.; member of the State house of representatives 1816-1826, 1828-1830, and 1833-1835, and served as speaker of the house 1820-1822, 1825, 1826, and 1829; State’s attorney for Orange County 1819-1822 and 1830-1834; elected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress (March 4, 1823-March 3, 1825); elected as an Adams candidate to the Twentieth Congress (March 4, 1827-March 3, 1829); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1828; was a clerk in the War Department 1835-1839; clerk in the Treasury Department in 1840; died in Washington, D.C., December 24, 1841; interment in the Congressional Cemetery.
