Info | Abraham Jacob "Abe" Hirschfeld
With more than a half century of economic development and public service experience, as well as countless profitable real estate enterprises, Abe Hirschfeld has emerged as one of New York's most successful builder/developers and businessmen.
Abe was born in the small Polish city Turnow, in 1919. He came from a distinguished and successful Jewish merchant family. His father Simon earned a Ph.D. from the University of Vienna and went on to establish a thriving commercial scale compnay in Tarnow. The rise of Adolph Hitler in neighboring Germany and the resurgence of native Polish anti-Semitism prompted Simon Hirschfeld to evacuate his family to Palestine in 1934.
Hirschfeld's formal education ended at age 12 when he was forced by the failure of his father's business in Palestine to go to work in an automotive and refrigerator factory. At age 15, Hirschfeld invented, but never patented, the magnetic door closing system for freezers and home refrigerators still in use today.
