InfoWhile Essex Town Clerk Cheryl Moomey was born in Detroit, MI to an FBI agent father and music teacher mother, her connections to our region go back more than a century. Her cousins include Montpelier’s Admiral George Dewey, the Hero of Manila Bay, and Hendrick Bredenburg, one of the first ski manufacturers in the United States in Champlain, NY. In nearby Lake Placid, shortly after the close of the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Olympics, she began her first job as assistant to the Executive Director of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, witnessing coach Herb Brooks’ US Hockey Team hoist the gold medal for their Miracle on Ice win over the Soviet Union.

After relocating to New York City, Cheryl gained experience in everything from airport security management to large scale commercial leasing, as well as working with large Wall Street concerns. From the inside of his own firm she even helped the Securities and Exchange Commission bring down Ivan Boesky for insider trading in the mid-1980s. But as any Vermonter can tell you, the Big Apple can wear on any person after a period of time, especially if family is far away.

Cheryl has an identical twin sister, Moretown’s Michele Mitchell. In the mid-1990s Cheryl moved to Vermont to be closer to her. After a stint in marketing administration at Polhemus in Colchester, Cheryl joined Michele doing title abstract work for real estate attorneys and financial institutions in Town Clerks’ offices all over the state. Vermont is one of only two states (the other is Connecticut) in the country that file the information necessary to transfer title to property at the local level, and every town is different. The one constant companion to our Clerks in maintaining our local records, and administering elections and our unique Town Meeting system is the Secretary of State.
