InfoState Sen. Matt McCoy was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1996 after serving two terms in the Iowa House of Representatives.

He represents Senate District 31, the neighborhood where he grew up -- south and southwest Des Moines. His parents, Bill and Mary Ann McCoy, owned Seller's Hardware, on the corner of Southwest 9th and Park Ave., for 30 years.

While in the minority party in the Senate, Matt McCoy successfully secured funding to bring life-enhancing HIV/AIDS medicine to needy Iowans. This was the first time Iowa has ever appropriated funding for AIDS patients.

Through innovation and fiscal responsibility, McCoy helped eliminate a $66 million shortfall in the state’s Medicaid program. Additionally, he helped expand access to health care for more than 400,000 Iowans by supporting a major reform extending equality of health insurance coverage for certain mental health conditions.

Senator McCoy is the Co-Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee and also serves on the Commerce, Ways and Means, and Local Government Committees. Additionally, he is a member of the Administration and Regulation Budget Subcommittee.
