InfoHarry Welty is a former teacher, a former member of the Duluth School Board, a writer and a 35-year moderate Republican who recently caucused with the Democratic Party. He's not impressed with the mania of activists in the Democratic Party to impeach President Bush even if it can be proven that the President is guilty of worse things than incompetence.

Until recently Harry wrote a column for the Reader Weekly an alternative newspaper. He frequently writes about the political arena. Reading of a couple of Harry's columns is the best way to see what makes him tick. Here's a link to a topical list of some of Harry's columns.

Harry expects to be a transitional figure in Congress. He's counting on enough newcomers being elected to Congress with him in the 2006 and 2008 elections to form a core moderates from both political parties. He intends to work with this group to get past the hot button stalemated do nothing Congress of recent years. He would also like to focus on national priorities by stripping senior congressmen of their power to grab pork barrel spending by relying on a neutral organization like the Congressional Budget Office to designate local spending. Under the current system voters are afraid to abandon aged Congressman who have long since ceased looking out after the national interest in preference to their own reelections.

This is not the 1st time Harry has run for Congress as an Independent candidate.

Harry Challenged Jim Oberstar in 1992 and although Harry had never been elected to public office and had only a few thousand dollars to campaign he received 22,000 votes, nearly 10% of the total.
