Info | Lawyer, author, ethicist, John Frohnmayer’s views on the First Amendment and the role of government in respecting and preserving the Bill of Rights first captured national attention when he served as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts during the first Bush administration.
John's personal and professional career is marked by a commitment to social justice -- from bringing Martin Luther King, Jr. to Stanford as an undergrad, working with youth clubs in England and the Bronx, and representing victims of sex, job and religious discrimination as a trial attorney for 25 years in Oregon and Montana.
John has spoken at more than 150 colleges and universities and hundreds of service organizations during the last 15 years. The People for the American Way honored him with its first National First Amendment Award in 1992, the Governor of Oregon recognized him for excellence in public service with the Governor’s Arts Award in 1993, and the Montana Library Association awarded him its Intellectual Freedom Award in 1997.
John graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in American History, and studied at Union Theological Seminary in New York as a Rockefeller Fellow prior to taking his Masters degree in Christian Ethics from the University of Chicago. Following U.S. Navy service in Viet Nam, John graduated from the University of Oregon School of Law where he served as editor-in-chief of the Law Review.
John is a retired lawyer and lecturer. He has been married to Leah for 40 years and they have two sons, Jason and Aaron. John is a competitive rower and a singer.
