Info | THURSTON, Samuel Royal, a Delegate from the Territory of Oregon; born in Monmouth, Kennebec County, Maine, April 15, 1816; attended Wesleyan Seminary, Readfield, Maine, and Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H.; was graduated from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in 1843; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1844 and commenced practice in Brunswick, Cumberland County, Maine; moved to Burlington, Iowa, in 1845 and continued the practice of law; editor of the Iowa Gazette; moved to Oregon City, Oreg., in 1849 and engaged in the practice of his profession; when the Territory of Oregon was formed was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first Congress (March 4, 1849-March 3, 1851); died while at sea April 9, 1851, en route to his home from Washington, D.C., and was buried in Acapulco, Mexico; reinterment in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Salem, Marion County, Oreg.
