| Info | INGERSOLL, Joseph Reed, (son of Jared Ingersoll and brother of Charles Jared Ingersoll), a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Philadelphia, Pa., June 14, 1786; pursued a classical course and was graduated from Princeton College in 1804; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Philadelphia, Pa.; elected as an Anti-Jacksonian candidate to the Twenty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1835-March 3, 1837); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1836; resumed the practice of law; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Sergeant; reelected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth, Twenty-ninth, and Thirtieth Congresses and served from October 12, 1841, to March 3, 1849; chairman, Committee on the Judiciary (Thirtieth Congress); declined to accept the nomination as a candidate for reelection in 1848 to the Thirty-first Congress; appointed Minister to Great Britain by President Fillmore and served from August 21, 1852, to August 23, 1853; died in Philadelphia, Pa., February 20, 1868; interment in St. Peter’s Protestant Episcopal Churchyard.
