InfoORTH, Godlove Stein, a Representative from Indiana; born in Lebanon, Pa., on April 22, 1817; attended the Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1839 and commenced practice in LaFayette, Ind.; member of the State senate 1843-1848 and served one year as president; presidential elector on the Whig ticket in 1848; delegate to the peace convention held in Washington, D.C., in 1861 in an effort to devise means to prevent the impending war; served as captain of a company of Volunteers during the Civil War; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1863-March 3, 1871); chairman, Committee on Private Land Claims (Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses), Committee on Foreign Affairs (Forty-third Congress); was not a candidate for reelection in 1870 to the Forty-second Congress; elected to the Forty-third Congress (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1875); was not a candidate for renomination in 1874; appointed Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Austria-Hungary March 9, 1875, and served until May 23, 1876, when he resigned; elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses and served from March 4, 1879, until his death in LaFayette, Tippecanoe County, Ind., December 16, 1882; interment in Springvale Cemetery.
