William Purnell, commander, Twenty-ninth Infantry Division; admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1953 and commenced practice in Frederick, 1958; Frederick County attorney, 1959-1961; chairman, Maryland State Planning and Zoning Law Study commission, 1966-1970; member, Maryland house of delegates, 1963-1967; member, Maryland senate, 1967-1971; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-second and to the three succeeding Congresses; served from January 3, 1971, until his death October 11, 1978, in Hagerstown, Md.; was a successful candidate for renomination to the Ninety-sixth Congress; interment in Antietam National Cemetery, Sharpsburg, Md.
