InfoMy background as an organizer, Personal Bailiff, attorney and Executive Director of a non-profit makes me a great choice to be a State Representative. Here’s a listing of my career and the work that I am most proud of in each position.

Me, my wife Chris, and our four children, Claire, Tom, Kevin and Matt.

I am active in my community, with my family and in politics. I coach my kids in soccer and baseball. My wife and I worked successfully in the redevelopment of Riverside elementary, our children’s school. I am on the executive committee of Campaign for a New Ohio, the labor and community group, working to develop political infrastructure for the 2006 gubernatorial elections and the minimum wage battle.

I have been married to my wife Chris since 1987. We have 4 children, (Claire - age 14, Tom- age 13, Kevin and Matt age 10) which is where I have learned any and all of my skills at high pressure negotiations.

I received my B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Dayton and my J.D. from Cleveland Marshall College of Law. I was admitted to the bar in 1996. I have served as a community organizer for the St. Clair-Superior Coalition and was a Field Representative for the City of Cleveland Community Relations Board. From 1990 - 1996, I was the court administrator and Personal Bailiff for Judge William H. Corrigan at Cleveland Municipal Housing Court. In 1996 -1997 I was an instructor with the Cleveland Marshall College of Law, Housing Law Clinic. I began working with Cleveland Tenants Organization (CTO) in 1997 and in 1999 became the Executive Director. From 1988 until 1996 when I left employment with the City of Cleveland, I was an AFSCME member.

As an Executive Director for the last 6 years of the Cleveland Tenants Organization, I have in Ohio and the country. Our work with tenants at Longwood (now Arbor Park), Rainbow Terrace and Carter Manor spreserved and strengthened one of the most respected housing rights organizationsaved thousands of families from being kicked out onto the street by the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development and resulted in over $160,000,000 worth of reconstruction and new affordable housing being built. Homes built by union labor.

In Cleveland and Warrensville Heights, I have worked with local government and written laws which help protect tenants from illegal utility bill increases, excessive late fees and retaliation.

As an organizer, I have done everything from block club organizing in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood to organizing the largest rent strike in Ohio’s history at Columbia Park Manufactured Home Park when out of state landlords bought the park and raised senior citizen rents by 25%.

As Personal Bailiff for Judge Bill Corrigan in Housing Court from 1990-1996, I was responsible for running the Housing Court docket and administering the nearly $1 million budget for the court.

As an attorney I successfully represented victims of the first predatory lending cases in Cuyahoga County in the late 1990’s and continue to help victims of security deposit scams, and families hurt by lead based paint.
