| Info | In his fourth term of service in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Chris John represents the diverse interests of Louisiana�s Seventh Congressional District. Congressman John hails from Crowley, Louisiana in the heart of Acadia Parish. The ten southwestern parishes he represents are as culturally diverse as the Cajun heritage for which they are known. The district is a home to rich energy and agricultural industries, and the nation�s premiere habitat for hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
Throughout his tenure in Washington, Congressman John has been a tireless advocate for Louisiana�s wealth of natural resources. True to his upbringing in the heart of sportsman�s paradise, he has led efforts in the House to combat the erosion and marsh destruction affecting Louisiana�s precious coastline. He has worked to insure that Louisiana is positioned and equipped to compete in the emerging age of digital industry and electronic commerce. His devotion to Louisiana�s farmers has won him the respect of agricultural organizations statewide, and his work on behalf of our domestic oil and gas producers has made him a key player in Congress' work to construct a national energy policy.
Congressman John will be at the center of these important policy discussions in the 108th Congress as a member of the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee. He is pursuing an aggressive agenda on the Committee, including the crafting of a national energy policy, working to relieve unnecessary regulatory burdens on Louisiana�s farmers, promoting the development of a high-tech economy in Louisiana in an effort to bridge the �digital divide� and bring increased opportunities to our state, as well as leading the fight to better equip Louisiana parishes in combating outbreaks of the West Nile virus. Congressman John serves on two Energy and Commerce Subcommittees -- Energy and Air Quality; and Health.
Named as one of Congress� �Next Generation of Leaders� by Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call, Congressman John has been an active voice in support of efforts targeting debt reduction and greater fiscal responsibility. He is a leader of the Blue Dog Coalition, the conservative voice for the Democratic party within Congress, and hopes to continue to use this affiliation to forge a bipartisan consensus on topics from health care and Social Security to tax relief. The Lafayette Daily Advertiser wrote that Congressman John�s �impressive accomplishments are beneficial to Louisiana and his brand of leadership is sorely needed in the halls of Congress.�
A small business owner and former state elected official, Congressman John holds a degree in business administration from Louisiana State University. In 1987, he was elected to the seat his father once held in the Louisiana Legislature and proceeded to serve eight years winning re-election without opposition. He began his term in the U.S. House of Representatives in January of 1997.
Congressman John is married to the former Payton Smith of Leesville, Louisiana. They are the proud parents of twin sons Hays and Harrison. The family makes their home in Crowley, Louisiana.
