InfoDavid Schapira, a candidate for State Representative in District 17, is a third generation Arizonan and Valley native. His family first came to the state in 1944, shortly before his grandfather started the family business, a Phoenix-based construction equipment company which is still going strong today. David is a former educator, small business owner and political activist who first moved to Tempe in 1984.

David's career has been rooted in improving his community. After serving as an aide to Senator Tom Daschle in Washington, DC, David returned to his home state to teach high school. As an Arizona educator, he found that the State Legislature was truly failing Arizona's children. In 2002, he reengaged in politics by coordinating Terry Goddard's campaign for Attorney General of the state. The continued protection of Prop 301, an education funding initiative, was a vital issue in that race. After the successful campaign, David briefly returned to teaching before starting a political consulting business. In conjunction with the management of various Democratic campaigns, David's company, Democracy Online, has designed websites for campaigns across the country since 2003.

Community service has been a large part of David's life from a young age. He was a member of the Kiwanis youth group, Key Club, in which he held various leadership positions. David, a cancer survivor, has also worked with the American Cancer Society both as staff and as a volunteer. He has been a participant in Relay for Life, Race for the Cure, Walk America and anti-smoking initiatives. He was also a member of his neighborhood village planning committee and has volunteered on various political campaigns.

David attended public school in the Valley from Kindergarten through Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University before receiving his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from The George Washington University in Washington, DC.
