Infoborn Cardiss Hortense Robertson in St. Louis, Mo., September 24, 1931; at the age of ten moved to Detroit, Mich., and attended the public schools; attended Northwestern University; began her career as a stenographer with Illinois department of labor, promoted to secretary with Illinois department of revenue, then accountant, and eventually moved into the position of revenue auditor and served in this capacity until announcing her candidacy for the United States House of Representatives; committeewoman of Chicago�s twenty-fourth ward; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-third Congress, by special election, June 5, 1973, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her husband, George W. Collins; reelected to the eleven succeeding Congresses (June 5, 1973-January 3, 1997); was not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Fifth Congress.
