YPSILANTI – Philip H. Power, founder, owner, and chairman of the board of HomeTown Communications Network, Inc. (HCN), has been invited to be the guest speaker for Eastern Michigan University’s commencement Sunday, April 27.

Power, who will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service, will speak at both of the commencement ceremonies. The ceremonies are at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Convocation Center.

Power founded his company in 1965. Initially, the company published six newspapers in Western Wayne County and had a staff of 20 employees. Today, HomeTown Communications Network (HCN) publishes more than 70 community newspapers with an aggregate circulation of more than 650,000. Newspapers published by HCN include: Observer & Eccentric Newspapers in Livonia, MI; HomeTown Newspapers in Howell, MI; Specialty Communications in Royal Oak, MI; and The Community Press in Cincinnati, OH.

He was a member of former Michigan Governor James Blanchard’s cabinet and chaired the Michigan Job Training Coordinating Council from 1983-90. In 2000, former Gov. John Engler appointed Power to the Executive Committee of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), where he is currently the vice chair of the MEDC and chair of the finance subcommittee.

Power also is a director of SenSyTech Technologies, Inc., and is the vice chair of the Michigan chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

A 1960 graduate of the University of Michigan, Power earned his master’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford University in 1964.

He is married to Kathleen K. Power and has two sons.
