Info | LeRoy Collins Jr., a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, has been routinely described as a son of Florida’s governor from 1955 to 1961. But he has a long resume. Here are some of the highlights.
A native of Tallahasee, Collins — who goes by the name Roy — was student body president of Leon High School and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1956. He spent more than 10 years in active duty, mainly dealing with submarines, before joining the Naval Reserves. His last post was a deputy chief of naval operations for logistics in 1990. He participated in Operation Desert Shield and was awarded the Legion of Merit three times.
In civilian life, Collins was an assistant to the president of Florida Power & Light Co., founding president of Financial Transaction Systems Inc., president of Dynamic Realty of Tampa, Inc., chairman of Payment Systems Inc, (which became Gateway Holdings Inc.,) and president of Telecredit Service Center Inc .
Collins also serves on numerous business and community boards including the board of Tampa General Hospital. He has been married since 1959 and has two daughters, two sons, and eight grandchildren.
Collins said he became a Republican about 20 years ago when he contemplated challenging then-Sen. Lawton Chiles, a Democrat, prior to the 1988 election. He said his father, an icon of the Florida Democratic Party, was not happy about his party switch.
