InfoCONKLING, Alfred, (father of Frederick Augustus Conkling and Roscoe Conkling), a Representative from New York; born in Amagansett, N.Y., October 12, 1789; was graduated from Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., in 1810; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1812 and commenced practice in Canajoharie; prosecuting attorney for Montgomery County 1818-1821; elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress (March 4, 1821-March 3, 1823); moved to Albany, N.Y., about 1824 and to Auburn, N.Y., in 1839; appointed United States district judge for the northern district of New York and served from 1825 to 1852; appointed United States Minister to Mexico and served from August 6, 1852, to August 17, 1853; settled in Omaha, Nebr., and practiced law until 1861, when he resided successively in Rochester, Geneseo, and Utica, N.Y., moving to the latter city in 1872; devoted much time to literary pursuits; died in Utica, Oneida County, N.Y., on February 5, 1874; interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.
