InfoTENNEY, SAMUEL, a Representative from New Hampshire; born in Byfield, Mass., November 27, 1748; attended Dummer Academy, Byfield, Mass.; was graduated from Harvard College in 1772; taught school in Andover, Mass.; studied medicine and began practice in Exeter, N.H.; surgeon in the Revolutionary War; returned to Exeter at the close of the war and continued the practice of his profession; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1788; judge of probate for Rockingham County 1793-1800; elected as a Federalist to the Sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Gordon; reelected to the Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Congresses and served from December 8, 1800, to March 3, 1807; chairman, Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business (Eighth and Ninth Congresses); pursued literary, historical, and scientific studies; died in Exeter, N.H., February 6, 1816; interment in the Old Cemetery.
