Barbara Bobo has always been a hard worker. She says, “I had to work hard. I’ve been fortunate because there were always jobs available for me, which is different than in many sectors of our society today, where jobs are few and the ones available are low paying. It does not have to be that way for the people of the Fourth Congressional District of Alabama, but unfortunately it is.”
“That’s why I’m running for the U.S. Congress from the Fourth District. I want to work to change the direction our district is headed and be a part of returning some sanity and common sense to our government.”

Growing up as the second oldest of four children of a farming family, Barbara learned hard work and dedication at an early age. Later she worked a full-time job, a part-time job and went to college at night. “I have always known what it is to struggle in life,” she says, “and I’ve had to use common sense to make the best decisions possible for myself and those who depended on me. It was imperative that I did.”

Bobo has always had an interest in politics. She says it was because she realized early that it is the political system that guides our lives. She worked her way up, serving in every capacity she knew to help people of her community to make their lives better. An active citizen, she was elected president of the Millport Chamber of Commerce and named the town’s Most Outstanding Citizen of the Year before being elected to the City Council. She served six years on the Council before being elected Mayor. She served five four-year terms as mayor, where she was effective in securing:

A sewer system,
A new library,
A city park
A National Guard unit and armory,
Two million dollars to begin the construction of a new school, South Lamar School
A new water treatment system,
A new regional resource building and municipal complex.
Securing funding for these projects required spending much time working with elected officials in Montgomery and Washington.
Barbara received the David M. Cochrane Award from the West Alabama Planning and Development Council in 1999. It is awarded annually to an elected policy-making official from West Alabama for outstanding leadership and innovation in local government through inter-governmental cooperation.

“I know the way the system works in Washington,” Bobo said. “I had to learn it to help the people of my town. However, I don’t like the way it is working now. Our government does not seem to have the best interest of the common people at heart any more. The working men and women of the Fourth District, Alabama and the nation seem to have been forgotten. And that’s not right! We are the foundation and backbone of our nation and if our government does not work for us in the areas of job security, a living wage, education, health care and retirement, well, it is not only a sad commentary on our elected officials, but it signals the beginning of the end for the way of life as we know it in the United States of America today.

"It is time for our government to refocus its attention on those who worked to make our country the great and shining example for the world that it once was. We need to return to the values of hard work, fair compensation, and education for all children and affordable health care for all citizens. Our government is not doing that today; it seems to be consumed with an ideology of helping the richest among us and helping the super conglomerates acquire smaller companies and more wealth at the expense of the poor. This is spawning a culture of greed and avarice throughout the nation.

"We are not living in the America that I once knew, and it is time to return to an era where the citizens of this country can find decent jobs and their children can count on a good education, and where health care is affordable and a secure retirement is assured. I’m running for Congress to join in a movement to restore those rights that we seem to be losing at an ever-increasing rate."

Some of Barbara's appointed positions:

Four years on Governor’s Private Industry Council worked to bring jobs to the West Alabama area.
Eight years on Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway Authority – a compact of five states which worked with deceased Congressman Tom Bevill, the Corps of Engineers and Congress to secure funding and construction of the two billion-dollar project.
Member of:

Alabama Press Association
International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors
Served in every capacity of various Civic Organizations, Charter President of Millport Civitian Club, raised funds for American Heart Association, Cancer Society, MS, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, etc.
Served eight years on the State Army/Guard/Reserve Employer Support Group for the Fourth Congressional District.
Barbara has also been a longtime political commentator on Alabama Public Television’s “For The Record.”

Why Barbara Says She Can Win!

I have been elected 5 times as Mayor of Millport.
I have been elected 6 times as Delegate to the Democratic National Committee.
I have been elected 6 times to the State Democratic Executive Committee.
The 4th District has historically been a Democratic district.
The Democratic ticket is expected to carry in the 4th District.
With candidates like Jim Folsom from Cullman and Ron Sparks from DeKalb, Democratic energy and turnout will be high.
The 4th District has experienced severe job losses due to the policies of the Republican Party and the incumbent.
The Iraq War is increasingly unpopular with the people of District 4, including the many military, guard, and reserve families.
Voters across the 4th District are ready for change in Washington.
I am the only candidate who can promise that!
