InfoGary Schiff was elected to the Minneapolis City Council in 2001 and was re-elected by a two-to-one margin in 2005.

Gary took office in a period of deep cuts in state and federal aide to cities. He supported fiscal reforms that saved taxpayers millions by reducing $80 million of debt, advocated for long-term financial planning, and stopped police and fire department layoffs.

Gary authored the city’s Sustainability Plan, started the Wireless Minneapolis initiative, made Minneapolis bars and restaurants smoke-free, and fought to create new gang prevention programs.

Gary is currently leading efforts to bring streetcars back, welcome immigrants, fight foreclosures, end homelessness, and make Minneapolis a model sustainable city.

Gary is an avid cyclist and AIDS activist and lives in the Corcoran neighborhood with his partner, David Barela.

Schiff’s community work includes serving as co-chair of the capital campaign for Little Earth of United Tribes, the largest American Indian owned housing development in the country. He has helped raise money for Alliance Housing, a housing provider for poor and homeless people. Schiff has served as a board member of his local small business association, the Lake Street Council and is a board member of the Twin Cities Family Housing Fund, which funds affordable housing in the seven-county metropolitan area. Additionally, Council Member Schiff serves on the Minneapolis/St. Paul Housing Finance Board, which finances affordable housing and home ownership programs in the Twin Cities.

The son of a public school teacher, Schiff earned his B.A. in Women’s Studies from the University of Minnesota and studied Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute for Public Affairs with an emphasis on economic development. In 1997, Schiff authored an amendment to the City of Minneapolis Charter that ended the police department’s exemption from local civil rights laws. That same year, Schiff co-authored a Charter amendment that requires voter approval for city subsidies in professional sports stadiums.
