Dr. Henry J. Boehm, Jr. was born and raised in Brenham, Texas, attending Alamo School of the Brenham ISD, Grace Lutheran Church School, Concordia Academy in Austin in the ninth grade and graduating from Brenham High School as Valedictorian in 1956. He then graduated from Blinn College as valedictorian in 1957.

He attended the University of Texas in Austin for one year, making all “A’s”, before entering the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston at age 19. Dr. Boehm graduated from UTMB Medical School in 1962 with honors, pledging Phi Beta Pi Fraternity and being named to Alpha Omega Alpha, Medical Honor Society.

While a senior medical student, he wrote and had published an article on “Diabetic Charcot Joint” in the New England Journal of Medicine.

After completing his internship at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin in 1963, he returned to Brenham to practice medicine as a partner with Dr. W. F. Hasskarl, Sr., Dr. “Boy” Hasskarl, Dr. Thomas Giddings, Dr. Joel Johnson, and many other Brenham Clinic Physicians. He practiced at the Brenham Clinic for 33 years, serving as the Clinic Vice President. A past president of the Washington–Burleson County Medical Society, he also served as past Chief of Staff of Bohne Hospital.

Dr. Boehm was a Board Certified Family Physician, and completed the Recertification Board Exam every 6 years. He was a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Academy of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Texas Academy of Family Physicians, where he served on the Academy Board of Directors and the Academy Foundation Board of Directors for many years.

For 14 years, Dr. Boehm served on the Faculty of the Texas A&M Medical School, serving as a professor in the Family Medicine Residency Program, teaching young physicians. He was named “favorite professor” several years.

Being appointed by County Judge Gus Mutscher, Dr. Boehm served as Medical Director of the Washington County EMS, along with Dr. Robert Stark, from its beginning until retiring in October, 2011.

He served as medical director of AMA Home Care and Gazebo Terrace Nursing Home and was a medical consultant for Germania Insurance Company until his 2011 retirement.

Also in the community, Dr. Boehm served on the Blinn College Board of Trustees for 34 years. He also served a term as Chairman of the Board.

A lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church, Dr. Boehm served as chairman of the congregation and as chairman of most of the Boards of the church. He taught Sunday School for 25 years, played the organ for the church since he was 12 and directed the choir for many years.

He was elected to a four year term on the Board of Trustees of Concordia University in Austin and served on the Board of Lutheran Outdoors Ministry of Texas.

Dr. Boehm was a past president of the local Rotary Club, the Brenham Boys and Girls Club, Mayor Walter Schwartz’s Downtown Development Committee and of Brenham’s first Summer Youth Recreation Board and served on the Volunteer Services Council of the Brenham State School as well as in numerous other civic and community activities.

He served on the Washington County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors two separate times and was a Blue Blazer for a number of years. In 1995, Dr. Boehm was named the “Washington County Man of the Year” by the Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Boehm adored his family, friends, and patients, and he was beloved by so many!

Dr. Boehm’s favorite talking points were often his family. He married Theodora “Teddy” Vanderwerth, whom he met at Blinn College. They had 4 children and 11 grandchildren. He is survived by wife Teddy Boehm, and children: Kathryn “Kay” Boehm Fannin and son-in-law Gary, Dr. Adelia “Dee” Boehm Brannen and son-in-law David, Dr. Henry J. “Trey” Boehm III and daughter-in-law Beth, and Dr. Teresa Boehm Cole and son-in-law Trey, grandchildren: Richard, Garrett and Gene Fannin; Christopher, Kathryn and Emily Brannen; Henry IV, Davis and Carter Boehm; and Ashton and Haley Cole.

Dr. Boehm is also survived by his sister Kathryn and husband Glenn Wehring, brother Robert Boehm, niece Shelby Boehm, nephews Mark Wehring, Jonathan Wehring, and Adam Boehm, and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents Henry J. Boehm, Sr. and Ethel Muchow Boehm, niece Amy Wehring Novelli, nephew Matthew Wehring, sister-in-law Mary Ann Boehm.
