InfoCABELL, Samuel Jordan, a Representative from Virginia; born in Albemarle (now Nelson) County, Va., December 15, 1756; attended the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va.; left school to enter the Revolutionary Army; appointed captain of Amherst County Volunteers in 1776; assigned to the Sixth Virginia Regiment; promoted to the rank of major for gallantry at Saratoga in 1777; served in Washington’s army in 1778 and 1779 and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel; was taken prisoner by the British May 12, 1780, at the capture of Charleston; after the war returned to Virginia and engaged in planting; member of the State house of delegates 1785-1792; member of ratification convention in 1788; elected as a Republican to the Fourth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1795-March 3, 1803); was not a candidate for reelection in 1802; died on his estate “Soldiers’ Joy,” near New Market (now Norwood), Nelson County, Va., August 4, 1818; interment in the family burying ground on his farm near Norwood, Va.
