Info | BAYARD, John Bubenheim, (uncle of James Asheton Bayard, Sr.), a Delegate from Pennsylvania; born at Bohemia Manor, Cecil County, Md., August 11, 1738; moved to Pennsylvania in 1756 and settled in Philadelphia, where he became one of the leading merchants; member of the general assembly 1776-1779 and in 1784, serving several terms as speaker; member of the council of safety in 1776 and 1777; during the Revolutionary War was colonel of the Second Regiment of Philadelphia Volunteers and served in the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Princeton; Member of the Continental Congress 1785-1786; moved to New Brunswick, N.J., in 1788; city mayor in 1790 and, later, judge of the court of common pleas; died in New Brunswick, N.J., January 7, 1807; interment in the First Presbyterian Churchyard.
