InfoZack believes that faith, a commitment to family, and hard work are important values and should be exemplified by our elected representatives. Born in Dover, Ohio in 1961, Zack is the son of Socrates Space and Sandra Gallion.

After graduating from Dover High School in 1979, Zack attended Kenyon College in Knox County. During his four years, he excelled in the classroom and on the football field. While earning a degree in political science, he was awarded All-American honors while playing for the Kenyon Lords, and was named the 1982 Athlete of the Year at Kenyon. Following his graduation from Kenyon, Zack enrolled in the Ohio State University College of Law, earning his Juris Doctorate in 1986.

Throughout his time in college on the football field and in the classroom, Zack learned the importance of teamwork, discipline, and the idea of playing fair. After law school Zack did not seek out a job with a large law firm, but instead returned to Dover and gave back to the community that helped shape him.

In 1986 Zack started a law practice with his father, Socrates. Their firm, Space & Space Company, LPA, has been serving the area for nearly 20 years. Their practice has focused on protecting consumer rights.

As a Member of Tuscarawas County and State of Ohio Bar Associations, Zack established a reputation as a caring attorney who stood up for the rights of the underprivileged. In addition to his private practice of law, Zack has worked as a public defender, and served as Special Counsel to former Ohio Attorney Generals Anthony Celebreeze and Lee Fisher.

After the untimely death of his good friend, Dover Law Director Thomas Watson, friends and family members encouraged Zack to become his successor. After gaining the appointment, Zack defeated stiff republican opposition, garnering an overwhelming 70% of the vote in a 2001 general election. With his dedication to the office well known throughout the community, Zack was uncontested in the 2003 election. He continues to serve as Dover’s City Attorney.

Throughout his tenure as Law Director, Zack has worked to ensure the city of Dover conducts business, passes legislation, and manages the city to the highest ethical standards. He has received praise from Democrats and Republicans alike for his dedication to the office and to the people of Dover.

In addition to serving his community, Zack understands the pressures of running a business. He is a managing member of several closely held companies that have constructed and operated three hotels in Tuscarawas County. Through his business experience, Zack has gained an appreciation for the demands that small business owners face here in Ohio’s 18th District.

Most important to Zack is his family. After meeting Mary Wade while the two worked together in the Public Defenders office, they developed a deep friendship which resulted in their marriage in 1988. They have two children, Gina (16) and Nicholas (15).

At age 6, Nicholas was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. Like so many others that must deal with this dreadful disease, Zack’s family has struggled with the fears, concern, and frustration associated with diabetes. It is this struggle that has played an important role in developing his strong advocacy for embryonic stem cell research.

For the past 15 years, his wife Mary has served as Judge of the New Philadelphia Municipal Court. The first woman Judge in Tuscarawas County history, Mary was re-elected in 2005 after receiving nearly 64% of the vote.

Zack has a strong record of community service. He has served as a Board member of the Tuscarawas County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, and been active as a coach in local youth baseball, softball and football leagues. He and his son Nicholas are very proud of having been the top fundraisers in each of the local American Diabetes Association’s annual “feet to beat diabetes” walkathons.

Zack is proud of his Greek heritage. His grandparents immigrated to the United States from Greece in the early years of the 20th century. His grandfather, and namesake, Zacharias Space, earned citizenship in this Country through his service in World War I. Zack is a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Massillon.
