Info | Parks Helms, a Democrat, and At-Large member of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, serving his sixth two-year term on the Board.
He was first elected in 1992 and has served as chairman during four of his five terms. In 2000, he received the Americans for the Arts County Leadership Award during the annual meeting of the National Association of Counties.
Helms is an attorney and president of the law firm of Helms, Henderson & Porter, P.A.
He has served as vice president of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA), as well as several NCBA committees, including the Legislative and Law Reform Committee, the Judicial Selection Task Force, and the Task Force on the Quality and Value of Legal Services. He is also a member of the American Bar Association.
Helms is a member of the Commission for the Future of Justice and the Courts in North Carolina which recently gave its report and recommendations for improving the judicial system. He is past chairman of the North Carolina Courts Commission. Helms served in the N.C. House of Representatives from 1974-1984 and has been appointed by Governor Hunt to the North Carolina Local Government Partnership Council. He is presently serving on the Board of Directors of the United Way of the Central Carolinas, the Arts and Science Council, the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and the Charlotte Center City Partners Board of Directors. He is a past president of the Charlotte Jaycees and a former director of Goodwill Industries. He serves on the Board of Associates of Meredith College and sits on the Board of Directors of Sykes Enterprises, Incorporated.
Helms is a graduate of Tech High School in Charlotte and earned a Bachelor of Arts and a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His other professional association memberships include the Twenty-Sixth Judicial District Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, American Judicature Society, North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the Delta Theta Phi Legal Fraternity.
Although considered a bonafide candidate for Charlotte Mayor in 2003, Helms declined to run for health reasons.
