InfoSteve Lonegan is New Jersey’s number one advocate for the overtaxed citizen. He is running for Governor to stand up for taxpayers, reverse the Corzine social engineering agenda and make New Jersey a great place to live, work, run a business and raise a family once again.

Steve was a successful small business owner who was elected Mayor of Bogota in 1995, defeating a longtime incumbent who left town finances in shambles. As Mayor, Steve stood up to powerful public employee labor unions and local left-wing interest groups, bringing a "Taxpayers First" philosophy to borough government.

Mayor Lonegan kept taxes low and his Taxpayer Protection Act mandates a public vote for new municipal debt or public employee contracts exceeding inflation, and under Lonegan Bogota was the first town in New Jersey to pass a ballot initiative restricting Eminent Domain. The Lonegan approach has always been aimed at putting taxpayers first.

Written off by insiders as a one-term mayor, Steve was reelected twice by double-digit margins thanks to his strong, conservative leadership. Even more important, Lonegan’s Republican Team kept GOP council control for eleven straight elections in a town that voted 64% for Barack Obama and 66% for Frank Lautenberg.

Steve Lonegan saw that his role as Mayor took him beyond municipal borders. Whether it was fighting illegal state bonding or stopping gasoline tax hikes, toll scams or countless other taxpayer rip-offs, Mayor Lonegan has and continues to speak out for frustrated taxpayers all over the state taking on Governors and legislators in both parties to do what was right for working families.

The Star-Ledger’s Paul Mulshine said that "Lonegan single-handedly ignited the biggest taxpayer revolt since the Florio years" by defeating two ballot questions in 2007. Soon after, Steve led the successful fight to stop Governor Corzine’s $38 Billion Toll Hike and Borrowing Scheme.

Born in Teaneck's Holy Name Hospital on April 27, 1956, Steve grew up in Ridgefield Park where he set several high school track records. Steve earned a B.A. in Business Administration from William Paterson College where he was Football Team Captain and an All Conference Division Center, later earning an M.B.A. from Farleigh Dickinson University.

After graduating, Steve built and managed retail, custom homebuilding and manufacturing businesses that employed dozens of workers. Steve lives in Bogota with his wife Lorraine (Rossi) and daughters Brooke and Katherine where they attend St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church.

Tough and independent, Mayor Steve Lonegan is the undisputed champion of New Jersey's overtaxed working families. He is the man we need as Governor. He is New Jersey’s last hope.
