InfoCorey Donald Woods has spent a lifetime engaged in public service. During his four years at New Rochelle High School he was active in Model United Nations, National Honor Society, the Black Culture Club, and the Women’s Issues Club.

Corey participated in athletics as well, playing first base and right field for his junior varsity baseball team during his freshman year.

During tenth grade, he was the captain of his youth league team. The same year, he was selected as one of the best players in his age group and named to New Rochelle’s Travel All-Star team. Corey also played point guard in the city of New Rochelle’s Summer League basketball program.

He eventually quit organized athletics altogether because he wanted to be involved in student government on a full-time basis. He describes his experience by saying, “There’s a point in high school where you really can’t play sports and work in student government. You either have to do one or the other full-time, or do them both part-time. I wanted to be a U.S. Senator more than I wanted to play first base for the New York Mets.”

His commitment to serving people was perhaps most illustrated through his involvement with student government. During his high school years, he served as Freshman Class President, Sophomore Class President, Vice President of the House in the General Organization, and finally President of the General Organization in his senior year. During the summers, Corey worked at Iona College Day Camps as a camp counselor for eight years (1992-1999).

Corey preferred helping children over taking possibly more lucrative summer jobs, saying, “I could have found internships that might have looked better on a college transcript. However, I always wanted to help people. Money isn’t everything. My parents used to always tell me that you have to do what makes you happy. If you do, you will be happier and you will do your job better. From there, the money and accolades you want will probably come.”

Corey attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from 1996-2000. During his undergraduate years, he was active in student government, serving as Wing Chair of his residence hall during his freshman year, and Vice President of his hall sophomore year. He graduated in April 2000 with a B.A. in Political Science, and a cognate (minor) in African-American Studies. After graduating from college, he took a job at the Handleman Company, which specialized in music distribution, where he served first as a Management Associate and later as a Market Research Coordinator. Corey’s commitment to public service led him to leave corporate America to pursue careers in both politics and education.

After deciding that he wanted to get his Master’s in Education, he applied to the College of Education at Arizona State University. After meeting with Dr. Nicholas Appleton of the Educational Leadership and Policy Studies department, he made a decision that he wanted to attend ASU that fall. Corey immediately fell in love with both ASU and the state of Arizona and decided that he wanted to take up permanent residence in the Valley.

Corey is currently finishing up his M.A. in Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education. He has already been accepted into the doctoral program in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. Corey is a faculty associate at ASU, where he teaches a class entitled “Culture and Schooling” for students preparing to be educators. Corey has continued his commitment to children by completing an internship at Scales Professional Development School in Tempe in spring 2004.

Corey is also an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Tempe.

Corey is currently working hard to be elected to the Tempe City Council in 2006, where he hopes to serve its citizens for years to come.
