InfoFirst Lieutenant Arthur MacArthur was one of twenty men cited for personal valor in the fighting in and around Chattanooga, Tennessee, November 24 & 25, 1863. On November 25 in action at Missionary Ridge where fifteen men earned Medals of Honor, Lieutenant MacArthur was in charge of the color detail of the 24th Wisconsin as they lead the attack on Missionary Ridge. When the soldier assigned to carry the battle flag fell to an enemy bayonet, another soldier rushed forward to hoist the flag. The roar of cannon fire filled the ridge and the second color bearer fell, decapitated by a cannon ball. Bloody and wounded, Lieutenant MacArthur retrieved the colors himself. Raising the already battle-scared flag high he turned to his troops with the shout "On Wisconsin!" and proceeded up the ridge. As MacArthur reached the summit he firmly planted the staff of the flag in the ground. Below him the advancing soldiers saw their flag, battered and scarred, waving in the breeze at the top of the precipice. Their hearts filled with inspiration, they surged forward, doing the improbable, achieving victory at Missionary Ridge.

On September 5, 1912, retired General Arthur MacArthur attended the 50-year reunion of the survivors of the 24th Wisconsin. Standing at the podium, with the same scarred battle flag he had earned the Medal of Honor carrying, and preparing to give the keynote address to his comrades, he collapsed and died. He was carried from the hall, wrapped in the same flag he had carried so valiantly at Missionary Ridge. He and his son Douglas are one of only TWO Father/Son Recipients of the Medal of Honor.
