InfoJOLLEY, John Lawlor, a Representative from South Dakota; born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, July 14, 1840; attended the common schools; graduated from Eastman Business College; moved to Wisconsin in 1857; enlisted as a private in Company C, Twenty-third Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, August 22, 1862; was mustered out as second lieutenant July 4, 1865; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced practice in Vermilion, Dakota Territory; member of the Territorial house of representatives in 1867 and 1868; president of the Territorial council in 1875 and 1881; mayor of Vermilion in 1877 and 1885; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1884; member of the constitutional convention in 1889; member of the State senate in 1889 and 1890; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John R. Gamble and served from December 7, 1891, to March 3, 1893; was not a candidate for renomination; resumed the practice of law; died in Vermilion, S.Dak., December 14, 1926; interment in Bluff View Cemetery.
