Bob was born in Sidney and raised in Glenwood, where he graduated from Glenwood High School in 1957. After high school, Bob worked for Western Electric in Omaha as a tool and die maker and was a proud member of IBEW.
He and Barbara married in 1961, and, with a vision for the future, Bob left Western Electric in 1963 and enrolled at Northwest Missouri State. After graduating with honors and a BS in Mathematics, Bob continued his education with graduate studies at The University of Missouri and Indiana University, earning his post graduate degree in mathematics in 1972.
He returned to the manufacturing sector that year in a technical position with Control Data Corporation designing systems and processes, and through initiative and drive moved from the technical arena into middle management. He later accepted a position as President and COO of a communications company involved in early exploration of Internet business applications, and in 1990 founded his own international consulting firm, serving clients as varied as NASA contractors to Tokyo's Mitsui Bank.
Throughout his professional career, Bob traveled extensively overseas and worked closely with people in many countries and from a vast range of backgrounds. In July 2001, Bob retired from his consulting business to focus more specifically on Democratic activism and pursuing his hobbies of woodworking, golfing, bird hunting and fly fishing, and catching up on some of his favorite authors' works.
Bob says he and wife Barbara made the decision to retire in southwest Iowa based on a number of factors, and with their ever-increasing community involvement, neither has ever looked back.
“I don’t think there was any question where we would live after retirement," Bob says. "We have lived in and traveled to many extraordinary cities and states over the years, but we’ve yet to find a place where the values people hold dear are as genuine and endowed with as much common sense as Iowa. We both have family in this area as well as many friends. It’s nice to be home.”
Bob's political activism for the Democratic Party, its candidates and issues spans four decades, and the former Colorado State Central Committee member and current 5th Congressional Southern District Vice Chair often can be found manning phone banks, walking precincts, serving as a precinct captain or engaging new voters in a lively discussion. The Democratic devotee also serves as Vice Chair of the IDP's State Platform Committee, and only recently stepped down as Page County's Central Committee Chair to invest more time meeting and getting to know constituents across his congressional district's 32 counties.
From the shop floor to the Board Room, Bob's ability to visualize, plan, seek out others' input and incorporate that feedback continues to expand upon his wide range of professional experiences and repeatedly demonstrates his capacity to implement objectives. The rural Essex, IA, trailblazer says collaboration and cooperation are vital to any endeavor's success, and, as one who learned firsthand how each stage frames the whole, it's his responsibility to share with others what his predecessors granted him.
“By working with and listening to the people in Iowa’s 5th District, we can build a vision for Western Iowa that can become a model that others will want to emulate," he said in a recent interview. "It’s time for me to give back to the society and culture which has provided me so many opportunities.”
