InfoMrs. Margaret "Peggy" Henican Wilson

Peggy Wilson is a native of New Orleans. She is a graduate of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans and Barat College, Lake Forest, Illinois, with a degree in English. After teaching for 11 years in the Crescent City, she worked in the fields of management consulting and public relations.

Peggy was elected to represent District A on the City Council in 1986. She was reelected in 1990 and four years later ran successfully for one of the two at-large seats on the Council. She was one of the first two women to ever be elected to the City Council. For two years she was elected President of the City Council.

During her career in city government Peggy earned a reputation as the "watchdog of the Council" because of her strong stands for the people and neighborhoods of New Orleans and against entrenched corruption and incompetence.

While in office, she led a successful term limits ballot initiative winning with over 67% of the vote across New Orleans. She served on the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board as Chairman of the Finance Committee, and on many civic and cultural Boards and Commissions.

When New Orleans was chosen as host city for the 1988 Republican National Convention, the city turned to Peggy Wilson to plan and execute the mammoth operation. Peggy’s involvement in staging this important event helped to put New Orleans on the map as a big time convention venue and special events city. Her administrative skills in hosting a major political convention served the hospitality industry well with outstanding positive media coverage.

Peggy served briefly on the Orleans Levee Board as a nominee of Gov. Mike Foster who described her as a good government crusader. Her tenure was brief as her name was withdrawn during the legislative confirmation process because she would not play the “good old boys” games with Board business. Peggy, as a member of the Levee Board, asked the haunting question which was widely quoted in the media: “When are we going to talk about the levees?”

Wilson has long been active in promoting education, historic preservation, and the rights of children, as well as in local and state political and civic affairs. Most recently, she was a founding member of “Save Our Neighborhoods,” a grassroots organization of neighborhood leaders dedicated to rebuilding New Orleans’ unique character as well as its buildings. For the past seven years, she has been working with De La Salle High School fundraising and promoting the school to a broad spectrum of students in the metropolitan area.

With her husband Gordon, Peggy Wilson has four grown children. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Williams Institute, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and is an elected member of the Orleans Parish Executive Committee of the Republican Party.

She and her husband are members of St. Alphonsus parish and chaired the fundraising drive for the Blessed Francis Seelos shrine at St. Mary Assumption Church.
