Winsome Earle Sears was born in Jamaica and came to the United States when she was six years of age. Raised in New York City, she graduated meritoriously from high school. She enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 19 and became a US citizen one year later. Out of a platoon of 70 Marines, Delegate Sears is one of seven women to graduate meritoriously from boot camp. She held various leadership positions in the Marine Corps, receiving the Meritorious Mast for effective reorganization of the Training Department and the good conduct medal. Delegate Sears and her husband, Terry, have three daughters.

First Black Republican woman elected to the Virginia General Assembly. First female veteran elected to the Virginia General Assembly.

� Moderated Hampton Roads� regional community discussions on education reform

� Produced and conducted educational workshops for businesses, schools, the military, non-profit, and other entities.

� Developed and implemented an educational program in Hampton Roads called Workforce 2007 that was geared to provide meaningful student apprenticeships, internships, and mentorships to the real world

� Formed a coalition comprised of government, educators, business, military, non-profit, and other organizational representatives to produce change in the curriculum of the region�s (what region) public schools.

� Managed Leadership Hampton Roads and the Hampton Roads Education Leadership Academy designed to develop informed, responsible, effective leaders and also to provide educators with the business skills, exposure to the political and economic realities of the region, and provide opportunities to network with their peers and CEOs, respectively.

� Directed The Salvation Army�s women�s shelter in Hampton Roads

� Fought for homeless women and children in representing The Salvation Army in political and socio-economic, community level meetings

� Sought commitments from the Hampton Roads business community to help the homeless through jobs, cultural incentives, and child-welfare issues
