Law School; was admitted to the bar in 1808 and commenced practice in Orangeburg, S.C.; major of drafted militia in the War of 1812; elected a trustee of South Carolina College in 1812; member of the State house of representatives 1812-1816 and 1822-1824; served in the State senate 1816-1820; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-second Congress and as a Nullifier to the Twenty-third Congress (March 4, 1831-March 3, 1835); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1834; engaged extensively in agricultural pursuits and in the lumber business; member of the State senate from 1840 until his death in Union Point, Ga., September 1, 1851; interment in the family burial ground on his former plantation, “Midway,” near Orangeburg, S.C.
